This is my piece for 'Play Me I'm Yours' (Stoke on Trent: 2014), an international art project set up by Luke Jerram. The project features donated pianos being decorated by artists and community groups before being donated to charities and community groups.
Working with an open brief I chose to undertake this project using only improvisational collage. Armed only with a scapel, scissors, compass cutter and a selection of found papers (and some glue) I approached this with no clear starting point or fixed result in mind. Instead whilst listening to a carefully selected ipod playlist I allowed the different papers and cut shapes to suggest where their positions might be and the different relationships between the scraps of paper gradually showed themselves. What emerges is a synaesthetic visualisation of improvisational jazz and abstract neo-classical compositions.
